TACLOBAN CITY, August 1 (PIA) — “Kidney diseases can be prevented through proper diet and by undergoing regular urine check-ups with the doctor,” thus said, Dr. Antonio R. Paraiso, Adult Nephrology Consultant of the National Kidkey and Transplant Institute (NKTI) and Program Manager of the Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP) during the one-day forum dubbed as “Urinalysis: Maximizing the Use of A Basic Tool for Diagnosis and Prevention of Kidney Diseases” held at Hotel Alejandro, Tacloban city on July 28, 2011.

Dr. Paraiso disclosed that kidney diseases rank as the number 10 killer disease in the Philippines which causes death of some 7,000 Filipinos every year.

He informed that to avoid being affected by the various kidney diseases, the most important step to do is the early recognition and prevention of the causes.

How do we do this, he said, is to submit for regular check-up with the doctor at least, once a year for the urine examination.

Persons affected with kidney abnormalities look and feel normal, however, the abnormalities will be known only when the urine of the person is examined.

He added that the only way to detect problems about the kidney is to subject the person to a routine urinalysis.

He urged everyone to undergo a yearly urinalysis in order to avaoid such expensive replacement therapy like dialysis and kidney transplantation.

The forum on “Urinalysis: Maximizing the Use of A Basic Tool for Diagnosis and Prevention of Kidney Diseases” was attended by some 90 participants majority of whom were doctors of medicine working in government hospitals, municipal health offices and other government agencies in the six provinces in Eastern Visayas which include Leyte, Biliran, Southern Leyte, Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar.

The forum was jointly sponsored by the NKTI, Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). (FEJ/PIA 8 Biliran)
